How my journey to different schools and different languages started. I was born to a Turkish family in Germany. You would think that my first language would be Turkish because I was Turkish but it was not. My first or let me say primary language was German. I was going to a school in Germany; only Turkish I spoke was at home. I was very confident writing, reading, and talking in German but not so much with Turkish. I took Turkish classes in Germany, that sounds weird but it was necessary. It was necessary because the alphabet and grammar was different. I never thought I will need it because I was living in Germany and never thought that I might move back to Turkey. Actually I never wanted to move to Turkey, I was forced.

Now I am in Turkey with my little Turkish. What my friends and relatives said was that I was beginning a sentence in Turkish but it was ending up in German. I had a hard time at school learning with a different language. It was like starting a new life but I did succeed. At school as a second language we learned English, it was not hard for me since I spoke German, it was kind of similar. But the only thing I did not or could not learn is the grammar in all the 3 languages I spoke. For example what a verb is, simple perfect tense or any kind of terms related to grammar. I cannot memorize what is what but I can put sentences together in a right way and that is the important part.

I graduated high school in Turkey and married an American and moved to America with him. Now I have to learn better English to speak, read, and write. Not only because I am in America, I do also go to college. One of my classes that I take obligates us to write a blog. Let me tell you, I did not like it. I did not like the idea that everybody in the world has to see all the mistakes that I will make in my sentences. But with blogging I learned how to better my sentence skills. As I wrote I found my mistakes and corrected them and got better. Because of blogging, I passed my accuplacer test in sentence skills, which I could not pass for 2 times. My college class is almost over and my blogging journey too, at least for a while.

Piggybackers Wardrivers and Viruses

I have never heard the words piggybackers and wardriving before. Piggybackers are people who just want free WI-FI. It can be your neighbor across the street. It happened in my old neighborhood, there was a family who just moved in and didn’t have internet connection. When she needed to go online she was just sitting in her front yard and connecting to the other neighbors WI-FI. It was not long when the other neighbor caught her using his internet. How he noticed it is when his internet connection got slower, so he look up who was using his WI-FI and her name came up. He was not mad because she didn’t know that she was doing something bad and she was not being malicious. Wardirvers are like piggybacker, but they are malicious. They drive around to get free WI-FI but also your personal information like your bank account number and password. Here are few suggestions how to protect yourself from intruders to your WI-FI: Make a strong administrator name and password, turn on your wireless router on only when you need it, and don’t broadcast your name of network.

We all know what a virus is, but not many people know how you get infected by a virus or how you can protect yourself from it. One important recommendation is to install an antivirus software. I used my computer for 2 years without an antivirus software. I consider myself lucky but also educated by not getting infected by a virus. I never downloaded something from a not trusted or unknown website. If I got Emails from friends I didn’t open the attachments without scanning it, hotmail has a scan file option when you get an attachment on your Email. There is one more important thing I did; I never clicked on links that I do not know. If you have to or want to go to that link, type it in to your address bar.

Diverse Backgrounds

My point of view how people of diverse backgrounds can get along better is when they speak the same language. We must first educate ourselves about their backgrounds and respect each other. When speaking the same language we can communicate and understand each other better. I want to give an example, if you are between two Turkish people and they are arguing or you think they are, it might not be that true. When some Turkish people talk it might seem that they are yelling at each other. Its not that they are mad it is just how they communicate to each other. If you would know the language you would understand the situation. Educating us about people, your neighbors, classmates, or friends’ background is important. Imagine yourself as a Christian inviting your Jewish or Muslim neighbor for a baby back rib barbecue. That would be considered very rude. If you would take the time to know them better it wouldn’t be embarrassing. Maybe you did know that your neighbor is Jewish or Muslim but didn’t educate yourself what they eat or not, just ask what kind of meat they prefer. Asking questions is not embarrassing or rude; it shows that you are interested in their background. Respect all the people without thinking they have a different background than you. No matter they have white, dark, or yellow skin, they are short, tall, or come from a different country. They are all humans like you.

Copyright and Fair Use

Copyright protects by law the original work of authorship, which can be published or unpublished. Literary, artistic, dramatic, musical and other ways of intellectual works are protected by copyrights. A novel, song lyrics, pictures are some examples to of copyrighted works. It has to be a tangible form, which you have to be able to touch and see.

Where to get copyright? You can get a copyright from the copyright office or you can get it electronically from the electronic copyright office.

How can you protect your novel or play before you buy copyright? What to do is to mail your work to yourself and do not open the labels. That way you will have proof of your work, intellectual property that you had it before anybody else claims it as his own work.

When does it expire? There is question maybe you asked yourself about when a copyrighted work will expire. It expires 70 years after the copyright owner dies. If there is a joint intellectual property, which 2 or more people created a work, it expires 70 years after the last surviving copyright owner dies.

Fair use: The copyrighted materials can not be reproduced without the owner’s permission. To reproduce the copyrighted material you have to consider the Fair Use rules. Fair Use has 4 criteria and they are:

1. The purpose of fair use: Is it for educational, profit or non-profit use

2. The nature of copyrighted work: Is it a published or unpublished work.

3. The amount of copyrighted material is used: If you use more it won’t be Fair Use

4. What will be the effect on the copyrighted material: If the original work, material sells less copy than before, it is not a Fair Use.

Criticism, news reporting, education, comment, research, scholarship are purposes of reproduction of copyrighted material. For example if I want to use a graphic for my school assignment I have to state my source and I can not use the same graphic again.

The media and game devices have computer-like capabilities. You can connect wirelessly, has a hard drive, processor, and an internal memory. We see that the media and game devices become more and more like computers, but will the computer and the other devices convergence?

Since the computers are getting smaller every year, in the future it might be possible that the computer does everything a media and game device does. I would call it the “ I PC”. There is a picture I found how future computers might look like, it is small and easy to carry.

There is another question. Will this affect the media and game device companies? It might or might not. With the growing technology and inventions they might add different features to their devices to attract consumers. I think there will be a competition as it is always. And there are peoples they like it simple, which they will not choose the all-in-one device.

Computer Literacy

I do not think that computer literacy as it is understood today is different from what it implied 20-30 years ago. To be labeled as a computer literate you have to know more than checking your e-mails, or knowing about the part of the computer. A computer literate must be familiar enough with computers, to understand their capabilities, limitations, and to know how to use them.

The meaning of computer literacy did not change. The changing of technological and computing developments, a shift happened. It did impact and continue to impact our work, our life, and our recreational activities.

20-30 years ago there were not many careers involving a computer, but these days computers are in every career field. To get hired for a job you have to have some computer knowledge, first to fill out an application online and then to get hired. Not many places are using paper applications anymore. In the future, the employers’ computer hiring program will eliminate the resumes which did not write the keyword in it. The keyword is computer literacy.

Since the personal computers came out everybody wants to have one. Nobody wants to be left out. Nowadays the children know more about computers than the parents. Years ago children got together and played card games, board games, or just played outside the house. Now they do not get together in person, they get together online on video games. It is good to be computer literate, but it changed our life and recreational activities.

My Favorite Learning Moment

My favorite learning moment was when I learned how to play pool. It reminded me my physics class that I took in highschool, which I enjoyed. For example in phsyics: A light beam goes in to a glass prizm and goes out in seven different rainbow colors, every color with a different angle. The angles of the colors depends on the light beams’ angle going in. When you play billiards you have to calculate the angle to shoot in the right pocket. When I say calculate it, it does not mean to get a paper, pen, calculater, and ruler. You just have to try to see the direction you want to shoot the ball, that it makes to the right pocket you called.

My pool teacher is my friend, which I end up beating. After that moment, I wanted to play pool all the time. My friend was kind of regret that she tought me how to play pool. Not because I beat her, it is because I wanted to play all the the time. Once I played staight for two hours of pool. I do not say that I am a professional billiards player, I just enjoy playing it.

The first time I hold a pool stick is when I was about 20 years old and working in a restaurant, which had all different kind of arcade games, bowling, and billiards. It was a good place where famous people would come. Once, the professional billiard player in Turkey, Semih Sayginer, came to promote a pool tournament. There were journalist’s to take pictures, but they needed models and there weren’t any, so they decided to take the pictures of the employees. I was called to get a picture taken with Semih Sayginer, I had to pretend to play pool. What a shame, I never held a pool stick before, I was so embarrest. Semih Sayginer tought me how to hold a pool stick, so I learn to hold a pool stick from a professional. They end up publishing my picture on the newspaper.
